Hip conditions we treat
We treat hip conditions caused by acute and chronic issues, such as:
- Fractures
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Our hip replacement services
Our orthopedic program provides comprehensive joint replacement options that address pain, muscle weakness and impaired movement.
Signs you need hip replacement surgery
If nonsurgical treatments, such as steroids or anti-inflammatory medications, do not relieve hip pain, your doctor may recommend surgery. You may be a good candidate for hip replacement surgery if you have:
- Advanced arthritis or significant joint damage
- Chronic or significant pain
- Difficulty completing routine tasks
- Hip stiffness that limits your normal range of motion
Hip replacement surgery
During treatment, your orthopedic surgeon will replace the damaged parts of your hip joint with a prosthesis. The hip prosthesis includes a stem that goes into the femur (thighbone), the ball (head joint) that fits into the stem, and a cup that is inserted into the socket of the hip joint.
The two most common artificial hip prostheses are cemented and uncemented. Sometimes, a combination of the two types replaces a hip.
Preparing for hip replacement surgery
To ensure you are ready for surgery, your orthopedic team may perform:
- Blood tests and other exams
- Complete medical history assessment
- Physical examinations, including X-rays and other imaging services
Physical therapy for hip replacement
Through our rehabilitation program, physical and occupational therapists will teach you how to exercise, walk, dress and cook while your hip is healing. During your hospital stay, a case manager will assess your progress and goals for discharge. The case manager will also help with:
- Additional support through a home health agency
- Equipment that may be needed at home
- Inpatient rehabilitation, if needed
